Canadian Tax Credits for FSHD Patients

It’s tax time – and here are a couple of things that all Canadian FSHD patients should check out.

Disability Tax Credit (DTC)

This is a non-refundable tax credit that reduces the amount of income tax payable for individuals with severe and prolonged impairments (or their supporting family members).

It’s automatic for people with FSHD in Canada if you have a genetic diagnosis.

It’s not dependent on your net income and it’s retroactive for 10 years.

This Government of Canada website provides further details on the DTC and how to apply.

Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP)

This is a long-term, tax-deferred savings plan designed specifically for Canadians eligible for the DTC. Approval for the DTC is required to open an RDSP.

The RDSP helps build savings for long-term financial security, with tax advantages similar to an RRSP, but tailored for disabilities.

You can open an RDSP at most major banks (e.g., RBC, Scotiabank, TD, CIBC) or credit unions.

This Government of Canada website provides further details on the RDSP.
